Caring for you and your baby
May, 10, 2017
Our philosophy of care
is based on respect for pregnancy as a state of health and childbirth as a normal, healthy, physiological process.
Pregnancy and birth are very significant events in a woman’s life and that of her family. The care we provide will aim to respect the diversity of women’s needs and the variety of personal and cultural values that women, families and communities bring to these events. Care will be continuous, personal and responsive to a woman’s health, social and emotional needs.
We aim to keep women informed at all times of the progress of their pregnancy and likewise any issues that arise during their care. We will encourage decision-making as a shared responsibility between the woman, her family and her care givers. To facilitate this, care provision must include evidence based information, education and counselling support to enable the woman to make informed choices.

7 Healthy Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy
Baby is on the way!
April, 10, 2017
Once you are pregnant, here are some tips to stay healthy:
See your prenatal provider early in pregnancy. Whether an OB/GYN, Family Medicine Provider or Certified Nurse Midwife, your prenatal provider will help to establish your estimated due date, obtain lab work and answer any questions you might have. For uncomplicated pregnancies, your provider will likely want to see you every four weeks initially, then every 1-2 weeks in the third trimester.
Take a prenatal vitamin daily. These vitamins ensure that you and your baby get extra folic acid to prevent neural tube defects (conditions like spina bifida), iron to prevent anemia, calcium to keep your bones strong, and other essential nutrients.
Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. The old adage “eating for two” isn’t exactly true. Most women need only an extra 300 calories during pregnancy, particularly during the later stages. It is best to fill up on foods with nutritional value rather than having those extra calories be “empty” ones. A well-balanced diet with lean protein, fruits, veggies and low-fat dairy products is best. If you are diagnosed with gestational diabetes during your pregnancy, your prenatal provider will counsel you on the appropriate diet to keep your blood sugar within an acceptable range.
Be careful what you eat. Be sure to avoid soft, unpasteurized cheeses; raw or undercooked meat or fish; unpasteurized ciders and milk; raw eggs; deli meats and hot dogs as all of these can contain listeria, a bacteria that can cause significant complications during pregnancy. You should also minimize caffeine intake and steer clear of fish with high mercury content.
Exercise. There are many benefits of exercise during pregnancy but it is important to talk to your prenatal provider before starting or continuing any exercise routines. In general, low impact exercise such as walking, swimming or prenatal yoga are great to keep your blood pressure normal, prevent excess weight gain, minimize the aches and pains associated with pregnancy, and prepare your body for the labor and delivery process.
Try to get some sleep. Whether it’s the frequent trips to the bathroom or having difficulty finding a comfortable position, sleeping is one of the hardest things to do during pregnancy. If you have difficulty sleeping at night, you may need to consider taking 1-2 short naps during the day, if possible. As the baby gets bigger, many women find it most comfortable to sleep on their left side with a pillow between their legs. This position also ensures adequate blood flow to the placenta.
Listen to your body. You are working hard to grow your baby! Some aches, pain and fatigue are normal during pregnancy, but if something doesn’t seem or feel right, contact your prenatal provider.
We wish you a happy and healthy pregnancy.
